  • Lazy Days in Lakonia, Greece

The wedding of a very dear friend and her now husband brought me to Monemvasia in the south of mainland Greece a week ago. Given the distance from London and an unintentional detour around the southern coast to the port town of Neapoli, it was a long, long journey (around 20 hours!) but the beauty and the peace of the destination soon erased any sense of travel fatigue.w

We stayed at the gorgeous Kisterna Hotel and Spa, which is a very special resort. Somewhat rustic organic farm, somewhat medieval fort and very much 5 star bliss. Here are some holiday snapshots to give a taste of the experience!

Portrait of the bed, which deserves a mention as it was one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in!  Possibly one of those old fashioned strawfilled mattresses...

Loved the ceiling and crocheted lampshade too!

The food was delicious and breakfasts were perfect for those "mornings after":

This was one of the most delicious drinks I have ever tasted! They call it "lemonade" on the menu but it is in fact made from a special type of Greek fruit (sweeter than a lemon and a bit like a lime) - can't remember the name unfortunately! Anyway, it is mixed with a little bit of honey (of course! Being in Greece...), verbena and 5 other herbs grown on the farm. Beautiful colour too! Wish I could go back there for this drink alone!

And then there were drinks for the golden hour, that heavenly time when the sun sinks down behind the sea:

The ancient fort town of Monemvasia is on a small island (separated from the mainland by an earthquake in the 4th century), connected by a road from the mainland.

Even the local petrol station is pretty!

Monemvasia is a mysterious place, carved into the cliff of this little island.  Cars and motorbikes are not allowed inside the walls of the town, which gives you a sense of time-travelling as you step through the dark archway.  It felt like entering Tolkien's Middle Earth the first time but once inside, we were given a warm welcome from a palette of teracotta, clay and yellow walls.  There is a very special atmosphere in this town but you have to go there to feel it!  I wouldn't do it justice with any attempt of bottling it with words.

Some refreshments on a roof terrace of one of the charming cafes:  Another drink I fell in love with in Greece was their cold cinnamon cappuccinos - the Greeks are known for their great ideas after all!

Of course you have to get those postcard shots when a sailboat makes a cameo!

I do not condone grafitti on natural formations but I have to say, this rock says it all.  As in that's how you feel in Monemvasia; removed from all you worries and suspended in a magical forgotten time of long ago.

This photo may not look like much - I took it as I walked back onto the mainland so I could remember this little cafe - see the sign - there wouldn't be a hope of remembering the Greek name!  But as long as I have a picture I can tell people where to get some of the best ice-cream you will ever taste!

How many colours can you take in in one day? Infinite in Monemvasia...
